We, the undersigned, are calling on Hull City Council to properly recognise the contribution of the late Lord John Prescott by commissioning a public statue in his honour.
Lord Prescott was a proud champion of Hull, the East Riding, and working people across Britain. As Deputy Prime Minister, union leader, and long-serving MP, he played a pivotal role in shaping modern Britain — fighting for investment in the North, better public transport, workers’ rights, and the environment.
John never forgot his roots. He spoke proudly of Hull on the national stage and fought hard for our communities throughout his life. His legacy should be commemorated, not cast aside.
It is therefore shocking and shameful that the Liberal Democrat administration on Hull City Council voted against a statue in his memory. This decision is deeply disrespectful to a man who gave so much to our city and our country.
We demand that Hull City Council reverses this decision and moves forward with plans to honour Lord Prescott appropriately, with a statue that reflects the scale of his contribution and the pride we feel as a city.
Let’s give Lord Prescott the recognition he deserves.
