Dear Residents,
Firstly, I want to say thank you to all those who have been going above and beyond during these difficult times. It has been great seeing our community come together during this terrible Coronavirus crisis.
I wanted to take this opportunity to give you an update on the work I have been doing as your Member of Parliament for East Hull.
In March I launched a scheme to provide free meat hampers to those in need in East Hull, provided by Cranswick Foods PLC and delivered with the help of the Freedom Centre. They have been a great support to many of East Hull’s older and vulnerable people who were at an increased risk from COVID-19.
We also had a huge win for our much-loved sport, rugby league. After launching a petition that was signed by over 3,000 people and applying pressure on government Ministers, the government announced a £16M emergency loan to the League to help secure the game’s future, which came to a great relief to fans not just in East Hull but across the country.
I have also been fighting hard for our local caravan manufacturing industry which has, like many other businesses, been hit hard by COVID-19, as well as fighting P&O Ferries in their decision to make 1,000 Seafarers redundant after taking a huge amount of taxpayers’ money. I have spoken in Parliament on these issues about how we cannot afford to lose these incredibly good jobs in our local area.
It has been great to see our local Labour councillors hard at work in their wards speaking up on behalf of residents during this time. Hull City Council has been leading the way in as our local authority in all the help they have provided.
